Why We Choose a Plant-Based Life

As I learned about environmental issues, I became aware of the reality animals face. Realizing that my food came at the cost of their lives left a deep impression on me. When I saw a chick-shaped Japanese sweet, I thought, “I can no longer eat animals,” and made my decision.

About 6–7 years ago, my sister Nozomi became vegan and stopped using animal products and plastic. At first, I thought it was too much, but after reading a book she brought home, I started learning. When I found out about dolphin hunting in Japan and factory farming, I felt heartbroken. That day, I stopped eating meat and slowly changed my diet for the animals, starting with pescetarianism

Living as a Vegan in Japan

At first, I felt lonely and struggled to enjoy meals with family and friends. Even though I wasn’t doing anything wrong, I sometimes felt like I was all alone in the world, and mealtimes became stressful. In Japan, where veganism is not widely known, some areas have no vegan restaurants, and people even see it as a religion or brainwashing! haha
Still, things have become much easier. I no longer worry about others’ opinions or the lack of options. What truly matters is having people who understand and support me.

Veganism is not very common in Japan, and some people at work think it’s a religion. But over time, my loved ones have understood and supported me. In my hometown, there aren’t many vegan-friendly places, so I eat before going out, check menus, or bring my own snacks.
I hope more people learn about veganism!
